2020 PHIL STEELE/DRAFTSCOUT PRESEASON ALL-FCS THIRD TEAM: RB Elijah Dotson, Sacramento St, Sr.,...Dotson led the team with 742 rushing yards and also had a team high 70 receptions for 702 yards to give him 1,445 all-purpose yards in 2019. Dotson finished with 11 total touchdowns during the season with seven rushing and five receiving scores. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said his quarterbacks are doing what they can to stay in shape, throwing and working on the offense install every day. Harbaugh, who appeared Thursday on "The Rich Eisen Show," was asked how he will evaluate the quarterbacks heading into the upcoming season considering there was no spring practice, which was canceled when all on-campus activities were suspended in mid-March. Shea Patterson, the Wolverines' starting quarterback the last two seasons, has moved on to the NFL, and Michigan will break in a new starter. Dylan McCaffrey, Joe Milton and Cade McNamara will be part of an open competition once on-campus workouts and practices are allowed to begin. "That's to be seen," Harbaugh said about the evaluation process. "We've got some guys we really love and they've been champing at the bit. The guys are excited to get back to working out with the team, back to practicing, but our quarterbacks, in particular, they're champing at the bit, which is better."

McCaffrey has the most game experience. Last year he was 10-of-20 for 116 yards and one touchdown, while Milton was 3-of-7 for 59 yards and a touchdown. Harbaugh said the staff meets frequently with the quarterbacks in Zoom video conferencing sessions. "We've been installing football and told the guys, 'Hey, learn the system the best you can,'" Harbaugh said. "'Be an expert at it when we do get back together and also get in the best shape of your life and throw the football. Get out and throw it every day.' Missing spring football hurts for every team, but for a team breaking in a new starting quarterback, not to mention four new starters on the offensive line, this was a tough break for the Wolverines. It's a three-man competition - Dylan McCaffrey, Joe Milton and Cade McNamara - but really, this is about McCaffrey and Milton. Offensive coordinator Josh Gattis said they're starting with a blank slate, and last year's depth chart won't play a role. Ohio State football coaches since Jim Tressell have publicly put a year-round emphasis on the annual rivalry game with Michigan. The Wolverines have not placed the same 52-week emphasis on The Game. Buckeye fans cite that as a factor in their teams' current eight-game winning streak in the rivalry. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, however, told NBC Sports' Mike Tirico on Wednesday that the losing streak definitely stirs an emotional response for him. "We gotta beat Ohio State," Haurbaugh said on 'Lunch Talk Live.' "Nothing makes us angrier than that, or me. That's what we're working toward every day. "We've beaten everybody else, but we haven't beaten them. With a spring practice, perhaps Michigan's quarterback competition would be clearer at this point. But since the Wolverines never got in a practice because college sports activities were suspended two months ago in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, it remains fuzzy. This we know - Dylan McCaffrey, the backup to starter Shea Patterson last season, Joe Milton and Cade McNamara are competing for the starting job. But in offensive coordinator Josh Gattis' view, the Wolverines are "nowhere near to having a front-runner" at quarterback. Gattis met with reporters Thursday via Zoom to discuss a number of topics regarding the Michigan offense, including replacing four starters on the line - he said Michigan could be more athletic up front. But the quarterback competition is front and center.

There is no timetable when college football will resume, so for now, Gattis and his players will continue to hold virtual meetings. He said they have one install per week, and the players are on their own working out. "We got to get the reps, we got to get the battle going to figure out who's going to be our quarterback," Gattis said. "They're all even. They're all dead even. There's nobody out front, there's nobody left behind. Each guy is different. Each guy has a different strength and a different weakness than the other guys, and so it's a really interesting battle because we've got to be able to decide who's going to give us the best opportunity to win games. - Detroit News

Running back Tru Wilson, a favorite of Michigan fans for his tough blocking and hard running, has transferred to Northern Colorado. The announcement was made Saturday on social media. Wilson, the 5-foot-10, 200-pound former walk-on out of Warren De La Salle, rushed for 221 yards on 44 carries and scored one touchdown for the Wolverines last season, ranking him third among the running backs. He also caught two passes for 14 yards. He played in 26 games during his Michigan career, including 21 at running back. In early January, Wilson announced his plans to move on as a graduate transfer. He will be immediately eligible. Michigan fans appreciating Wilson's tough running would chant "Truuuuu" when he had the ball. He broke his right hand in the season opener last season but continued to practice until he was fully healthy to return a month later against Rutgers. - Detroit News

Michigan running back Tru Wilson says he's planning to transfer. He announced his decision Thursday on social media. "I appreciate everything the University of Michigan has done for me these last 4 years," Wilson said on his Twitter account. "I will graduate in the spring and will transfer to finish my last year of college football." Wilson rushed for 221 yards and a touchdown on 44 carries this season. 2019 AFCA DIVISION II COACHES' FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: DB Nick Ciccio, R-So., Colorado Mesa,...The Castle Pines, Colo. native tied for the Super Region IV lead in total interceptions with eight and finished fourth nationally in interceptions per game with 0.7. He had two interceptions in a game on three separate occasions during the year and returned three of his eight interceptions for touchdowns. Ciccio totaled 60 tackles and 22 total passes defended, which ranked second nationally, in his sophomore campaign. Three-time Super Bowl champion Ed McCaffrey is the new head football coach at Northern Colorado. "I am excited to be joining the University of Northern Colorado as their Head Football Coach!" McCaffrey announced on Instagram, and the school confirmed his hiring minutes later via a news release. A news conference to formally introduce McCaffrey as the program's 16th head coach was scheduled for Friday. He replaces Earnest Collins Jr., who went 28-72 in nine seasons in Greeley, including 2-10 this season. The Bears are a member of the FCS's Big Sky Conference.

McCaffrey, who won two Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and one with the San Francisco 49ers during his 14-year NFL career, spent the last two years as head football coach at powerhouse Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, where his sons Max, Christian, Dylan and Luke all played. Christian McCaffrey is the star running back for the Carolina Panthers, who drafted him eighth overall out of Stanford in 2017. His older brother, Max, was a wide receiver at Duke who played two seasons in the NFL, with the Jaguars in 2017 and the 49ers in 2018. Jackson was all over the field for the Bears asked to play in multiple roles in the defensive backfield. He ended up second on the team with 105 tackles and third in tackles for a loss with 4.0.
